Eyes

Forget the whole soul thing, our eyes are actually the window to our health – revealing our age, lack of sleep, circulation issues, to name a few.

The skin on the eye area has less structural support due to the fact that is lies over the eye socket. This structural support comes in the form of tissue / flesh and so it means that the blood supply to the skin in this area, sits more superficially when compared with the rest of the face.

When considering dark circles, this is one of the main reasons why they become as pronounced as the do.

Dark circles and puffiness can be caused by a number of factors namely; poor circulation, lack of sleep, illness, stress, medication or poor diet. This area is also under stress due to the constant muscle movement (expression and blinking) which results in the skin being stretched and pulled in different directions. Added to this, the eye socket (bone structure) widens with age and so the skin is under increased pressure as its capacity to stretch is pushed.

The smarter Plan - Caring for your skin before & after surgery

Date: 14/07/2016

Author: Ingrid Katz (Pure Aesthetics) & Dr Gabriel Doucas

Published in A2 Aesthetic & Anti-Ageing Magazine, issue 18

Dr Gabriel Doucas & Ingrid Katz elaborate how the combination of skin treatments and facial cosmetic surgery complement each other so beautifully.

As our bodies age, the skin changes... and it isn’t in a positive way. Our skin density decreases, meaning the skin becomes thinner. Less density leads to less plumpness, which translates to more fine lines and wrinkles. This loss in density is a result of decreased collagen production, depletion of subcutaneous fat, paucity in the availability of the vascular system (as it is pushed down) and a general breakdown of the finer structures of the skin.

The skin loses elasticity, making it sit less tightly on the underlying tissues. Additionally, our metabolism slows down with age - resulting in a slower skin cell turnover. More dead skin cells then hang on at the surface of the skin, which can result in impaired wound healing.

The Rise of Nutriceuticals - Treating from Within

Much is being talked about in terms of nutri-cosmetics or nutraceuticals. Essentially it’s vitamins and anti-oxidants taken in the form of oral supplementation or delivered to the system via an IV line (drip).

IV supplementation is something that’s been around for some time and used successfully to treat a number of ailments from a hangover through to immunity, dull skin and chronic fatigue syndrome. But lately, it’s become so popular, that you can pop into a “drip bar” to choose your vitamin cocktail, as you would a cup of coffee.

The Myers Cocktail is a nutrient cocktail invented by an American doctor in the 1960’s which kicked off the current attraction to IV vitamin treatments. It was designed as an alternative treatment for a broad spectrum of conditions and is a very fast way of getting critical nutrients and hydration into the body.

Vascular Laser Treatment

Broken capillaries, telangiectasia, spider veins... whether on the legs or face, many of us have come across these unsightly bugbears.

There are a few reasons why these veins appear:

  • Standing for long periods of time can cause veins to become more prominent, resulting in spider or varicose vein formation.
  • It could be genetic. If a family member has them, you have about a 50% chance of suffering from broken capillaries as well.
  • Spider and varicose veins can develop during pregnancy. Although these are likely to disappear afterwards, a few thread or spider veins often remain.
  • Extra body weight also puts extra pressure on the veins and there is a higher risk of superficial or varicose veins forming.
  • The natural ageing process also increases the risk of veins appearing on the surface of the skin as the skin structure becomes more compact.

Pixel Peel

Date: 01/05/2016

Author: Ingrid Katz (Pure Aesthetics)

This month we are going a little deeper. The Pixel Peel is our new and exciting treatment combining a TCA peel with a Dermapen needling treatment.

Both, TCA peels and needling have been around for some time and we have seen some pretty amazing results with them when done as stand-alone treatments. The combination of the two treatments now allows us to use both methods to achieve an even more effective result in one procedure.

With the TCA peel we are able to peel to a deeper level in the skin which allows for improvement to deeper lines, sun damage and uneven texture. The TCA peel is designed to penetrate the epidermal layers in order to stimulate the skin at a dermal level, it does this via a chemical reaction and the depth to which it has an effect, will depend on the layering that is achieved in treatment.

Treating Eczema

Date: 01/03/2016

Author: Ingrid Katz (Pure Aesthetics)

This month we are doing things a little differently and giving you an opportunity to see for yourselves, what we do and how we do it. Every so often I get a painful call for help that I must confess – I love! However, I absolutely, heart wrenchingly hate seeing a client and their skin in complete meltdown mode.

This particular client suffers from severe eczema – on her face mainly, but also across the body. Her face, for obvious reasons, is her primary concern. She has tried everything from home remedies to the severest of medications for this condition. Some have given temporary relief while others have only exacerbated the condition.
